Two-goal Kiessling makes right headlines in Leverkusen romp

0 commentaires

Stefan Kiessling put the furore of his "phantom goal" behind him by scoring twice and also winning a penalty in Bayer Leverkusen's 4-0 Champions League rout of Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday.

The forward headed Leverkusen ahead on 22 minutes and Simon Rolfes added a penalty early in the second half, his third goal in as many matches in the group stage, after Kiessling had been fouled.

Sidney Sam, top scorer in the Bundesliga this season, added a third and Kiessling pounced from close range as dominant Leverkusen leapfrogged the Ukraine side into second place in Group A on six points, one behind Manchester United.

Kiessling made headlines on Friday when he scored a "phantom goal" against Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga, his second-half header allowed to stand after everyone missed that it had gone in through the side netting.

Dinamo Zagreb v PSV 24.10.2013 uefa europa league

0 commentaires

don`t know what good can we say about Dinamo lately. They changed the coach for the third time this season and Zoran Mamic is the temporary coach again. The changes of the coach have not worked before so I don`t expect it to work in one days time. Dinamo has the best group of players they had in a long time but they look much worse then before. Besides loosing in Europe they are loosing in the domestic league against fairly limited teams. The last match they lost away to Split 1:0 and barely created a chance.

There is no confidence in the team, players are out of form and chances don`t come. The game is played with no audience but audience rarely helped Dinamo at home.

The only thing that could help Dinamo is the complacency from the visitors as they rarely showed how much they wan`t to play this competition. PSV lost the first match against Ludogorets but won away quite easily against Cernomorets. I did watch them play against Waregem away and though they are not very focused in defense they hold the ball well. They like to move the ball around the box a lot and always look for the pass on the offside line.

The team is young this season but I like how they played certain games. Dinamo usually loses these matches and PSV is just the better team.

Drogba on target as Galatasaray sweep past Copenhagen

0 commentaires

Galatasaray's Ivorian duo Didier Drogba and Emmanuel Eboue helped the Turkish club to a comfortable 3-1 win over FC Copenhagen to move into second place behind Real Madrid in Champions League Group B on Wednesday.

Their aggressive start paid off quickly as Brazilian midfielder Felipe Melo raised the roof in the 10th minute with a powerful header.

Dutchman Wesley Sneijder found the net with a classy right-foot shot after receiving a pass from Eboue in the 38th minute.

Eboue was the creator again in first-half stoppage time allowing veteran striker Drogba to make it 3-0.

Copenhagen pulled one back minutes before the final whistle when Claudemir poked the ball past Fernando Muslera.

Aguero double fires Man City to victory over CSKA

0 commentaires
Sergio Aguero's well-taken double fired Manchester City to a 2-1 victory away at CSKA Moscow on Wednesday which left the Premier League side in a good position to reach the knockout stages for the first time.

Aguero struck twice late in the first half after Zoran Tosic had put CSKA ahead in the 32nd minute. The Argentine quickly levelled with a low strike from David Silva's cross and then headed Alvaro Negredo's clever delivery past Igor Akinfeev.

City wasted several chances to add to their lead after the break and almost paid the price in stoppage time when only a brilliant save from Joe Hart denied Keisuke Honda an equaliser

City moved on to six points from three games in Group D, level with Bayern Munich who host winless Viktoria Plzen in a later kickoff. CSKA are third on three points.

Poor away form, with five defeats out of six, was a feature of City's group stage exits in their last two Champions League campaigns but they have now won twice on the road following a win in Plzen last month.

CSKA, in poor domestic form having lost three successive Russian Premier league games without scoring, broke the deadlock with a route one goal at the Khimki Arena.

Akinfeev pumped the ball forward, Honda outjumped Javi Garcia to flick the ball on and Serbian international Tosic, once of Manchester United, nipped in to lift the ball over Hart.

Their lead lasted all of 90 seconds, Aguero pouncing to fire home after Sergei Ignashevic had failed to deal with Silva's cross from the left under pressure from the Argentine.

City struck again three minutes before the break, Silva linking up with Negredo who deftly flicked a cross into the danger area which Aguero stooped to head home.

CSKA thought they had levelled 10 minutes from time when Ahmed Musa beat Hart with a fierce shot from the edge of the area but the whistle had already been blown for a foul on Yaya Toure.

The Khimki Arena pitch, CSKA's temporary home with the Luzhniki stadium being redeveloped for the 2018 World Cup, was passed fit to play, despite heavy rain this month which left large threadbare areas.

CSKA were ordered by UEFA to stage their home game against Plzen in St Petersburg due to the condition of the playing surface.

Tatu's late Steaua goal gives Basel the needle

0 commentaires

An 88th-minute goal by substitute Leandro Tatu salvaged a 1-1 home draw for bottom club Steaua Bucharest in their Champions League Group E match against Basel at the National Arena on Tuesday.

Basel had taken the lead in the 48th minute when Chilean midfielder Marcelo Diaz gave keeper Ciprian Tatarusanu no chance with a delightful curling shot from outside the area after a blunder by Iasmin Latovlevici.

The Swiss club, who beat Chelsea in their opening game, are now third in the group with four points, two behind the Londoners and Schalke 04.

Steaua, winners of the European Cup in 1986, have one point from three matches.

"The result was fair," Steaua coach Laurentiu Reghecampf told DigiSport. "Our team's attitude was very good and we won our first point, that's all that matters.

"I told the players we need to be more aggressive and not make big mistakes because we are up against very strong opponents."

The Romanians enjoyed a lot of possession but Basel created more scoring chances after finding holes in the home team's rearguard.

Basel almost took the lead in the 12th minute when centre back Ivan Ivanov's close-range shot was cleared off the line by defender Daniel Georgievski.

Tatarusanu then did well to parry an effort from Fabian Frei while Lukasz Szukala's brilliant block denied Mohamed Salah.

Behrang Safari also went close for the visitors when his shot hit the side-netting.

At the other end Cristian Tanase's shot from 25 metres was comfortably saved by Yann Sommer.

Valentin Stocker then hit the bar for Basel with a deflected shot five minutes before the break.

Steaua refused to give up and earned their reward when Brazilian striker Tatu, who came on as a second-half substitute, scored to delight the home fans.

"It was a game we wanted to win and it's a pity we missed our opportunities in the first half," said Basel coach Murat Yakin.

"But this is a positive result for us because we played against tough opponents today. Romania has quality players and a very strong championship."

Real Madrid v Juventus 23.10.2013 uefa champions league

0 commentaires

The Welshman returned from a thigh injury in Saturday's 2-0 win over Malaga at the Bernabeu, coming on with 14 minutes remaining and then winning a penalty in stoppage time, which Cristiano Ronaldo converted.
Bale has only made one start since his summer move from Tottenham to Madrid, which is estimated to have cost Los Blancos 101 million euros (£85.5 million).
Madrid head into Wednesday's match top of Champions League Group B after beating Galatasaray 6-1 in their first game, which they followed with a convincing 3-0 win at home to FC Copenhagen.
Juventus may be second in the group, but have just two points following a 1-1 draw in Copenhagen and a 2-2 draw against Roberto Mancini's Galatasaray in Turin.
Antonio Conte's side lost 4-2 at Fiorentina on Sunday, slipping five points behind Serie A leaders Roma.
However, Madrid star Ronaldo has dismissed the suggestion that the game was more important to the Italians.
"We have six points and no-one qualifies with just six points so we need to win the game," he said.
"It's a very big game and whoever wins the match will get a huge boost. We are at home and we have to try and win, we know Juve are strong and they will be hurt after losing to Fiorentina, but we have to play our football and be focused, that's the only way we'll win. If we get to nine points, we'll be very close to qualifying."

Ronaldo was also asked about stories that emerged in the Italian media this week that he had been close to joining Juventus before he signed for Manchester United in the summer of 2003, aged 18.
"According to the press, I have been close to signing for every club," he added.
"People can say what they want but the only team I signed for when I was 18 was Manchester United. It's a good thing that so many teams wanted to sign me when I was 18 years old, many teams wanted me and Juventus was one of them, but United and Alex Ferguson gave me the biggest guarantee that they would help me grow as a player. Many clubs were interested, but the one I liked the most was Manchester United."

With the exception of Xabi Alonso, Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has a full squad to choose from, meaning Raphael Varane and Karim Benzema, who both missed the win over Malaga on Saturday with injuries, could return to the starting line-up.

Costa dazzles with double as Atletico crush Vienna

0 commentaires

Atletico Madrid seized control of Champions League Group G when Diego Costa scored twice, including one of the goals of the season, in a thumping 3-0 victory for the La Liga side at Austria Vienna on Tuesday.

Playing at the Ernst Happel stadium where Spain beat Germany 1-0 to win Euro 2008, Atletico took the lead in the eighth minute when Koke sent Felipe Luis clear on the left and he squared for Raul Garcia to tap into an empty net.

Brazil-born Costa showed why Spain coach Vicente del Bosque wants to call him up when he made it 2-0 in the 20th after racing from inside the Atletico half, dancing past the last defender and slipping the ball into the corner of the net.

The home side tried to force their way back into the match but Costa dashed any hopes of a comeback when he controlled an Emiliano Insua centre and struck from close range eight minutes into the second half.

Atletico have a maximum nine points from three matches, with Russia's Zenit St Petersburg on four after their 1-0 win at Porto. Vienna have one point in fourth and last place, two behind the Portuguese side.

It was Costa's Champions League debut because he was suspended for Atletico's opening Group G wins against Zenit and Porto after picking up a red card in last term's Europa League.

The 25-year-old, who holds dual Brazilian and Spanish nationality, is the fourth Atletico player to net a double on his first Champions League appearance after current coach Diego Simeone, Sergio Aguero and Juan Esnaider.

Under Argentine Simeone, who has transformed the club since taking over at the end of 2011, Atletico have made a blistering start to their domestic and European campaigns.

The 2010 and 2012 Europa League winners won their opening eight La Liga matches before suffering a first defeat of the season when they went down 1-0 at Espanyol on Saturday to slip one point behind champions Barcelona.

Tuesday's success marked the first time Atletico have won three consecutive matches in Europe's elite club competition since their debut in the 1958-59 season.

Dortmund win at Arsenal with late Lewandowski goal

0 commentaires

Robert Lewandowski's late volleyed winner threw Champions League Group F wide open as Borussia Dortmund heaped more German misery on Arsenal with a 2-1 victory at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

The match appeared to be petering out into a draw when the unmarked Pole was picked out at the far post by Kevin Grosskreutz in the 82nd minute and he sealed victory for last season's Champions League finalists.

Dortmund, whose coach Juergen Klopp had to watch the match from the stands following a touchline ban, had punished a slow start from the home side to take the lead through Henrikh Mkhitaryan after 16 minutes, but the hosts hit back before halftime through France striker Olivier Giroud.

Dortmund, Arsenal and Napoli, who won 2-1 at Olympique Marseille on Tuesday, have six points, with Marseille bottom with none. Borussia emulated Schalke and Bayern Munich who won at Arsenal in the Champions League last season.

Widely praised for their free-flowing football against Norwich City at the weekend, Arsenal appeared to be basking in their own hype as Dortmund bossed the opening 20 minutes.

Marco Reus fired one dangerous effort wide after a swift break and with 16 minutes gone the visitors went ahead when Aaron Ramsey, who has hardly put a foot wrong this season, was robbed by Lewandowski on the edge of his own area.

Celtic break Champions League drought with defeat of Ajax

0 commentaires

Celtic rode their luck to beat Ajax Amsterdam 2-1 with goals either side of halftime on Tuesday, their first points in Champions League Group H after two defeats.

The Dutch side, who failed to take a number of excellent chances, were incensed by a penalty awarded just before the interval when Anthony Stokes went down after a collision. James Forrest scored from the spot after a long delay.

Beram Kayal doubled the lead nine minutes into the second period with a deflected shot from outside the area.

Celtic's Nir Biton was sent off in the game's final stages for a late tackle on Thulani Serero and Ajax's Lasse Schoene reduced the deficit with a swerving effort in added time.

"That's a fantastic win for us, a monumental effort from those players tonight," said Celtic manager Neil Lennon.

Ajax's Frank de Boer felt the better side had ended up losing the game.

"I cannot be angry, we gave 120 percent, we created many chances. But in the end we had to score (from them)," the Dutch side's manager said.

Celtic have three points in Group H and Ajax one. The 1-1 draw between Milan and Barcelona leaves the Italians with five points and Barcelona top on seven.

Ajax provided much of the invention and movement in the first half and put Celtic under pressure with quick breakaways, but the home defence stuck to their task.

Celtic had the first clear chance of the night but Teemu Pukki failed to get proper purchase on Mikael Lustig's cross from the right after 19 minutes.

Christian Poulsen had a great opportunity to put Ajax ahead when a free-kick by Viktor Fischer was flicked on but the midfielder, at a tight angle, could only hit the post.

The breakthrough came when Giorgios Samaras laid the ball back for Stokes to burst into the Ajax area. Stefano Denswil came across to cover and made contact with the Celtic striker who went down and Croatian referee Ivan Bebek blew for a foul.

The Ajax players were incensed and Forrest was made to wait an age before he could take the spot kick, which he sent high past Jasper Cillessen.

"It's always good to get a goal just before halftime," said Celtic's Charlie Mulgrew. "We knew this would be a massive game for us, we knew we needed three points to keep our hopes alive and we went all out to do that."

The start of the second half was studded with good goal opportunities and a neat Ajax move opened up the home defence but Serrero, on his own in front of Fraser Forster, allowed the goalkeeper to smother the chance.

Seconds later, Celtic were 2-0 ahead. Samaras cut in from the left and saw his shot blocked, but the ball came out to Kayal and his shot from outside the area took a deflection off Denswil and left Cillessen grasping at air.

Ajax should have pulled a goal back immediately after Ricardo van Rhijn's shot was blocked and Kolbeinn Sithorsson, with time to pick his spot from 10 metres, hit the ball wide.

Serrero blazed over when well placed with 12 minutes left while Daley Blind drew a diving save from Forster late on.

Biton's red card meant Celtic retreated to protect Forster who defied Schoene once before the Dane beat him with a bending drive just before the final whistle.

Qatar has 'problems to solve' ahead of World Cup-Platini

0 commentaires

UEFA president Michel Platini has urged Qatar to solve its "problems" ahead of the 2022 World Cup which will be played in the Gulf state.

"It's a gift that was made to the Qataris," the Frenchman told Canal Plus in an interview aired on Sunday.

"But there are problems and they have to solve them. There are more important problems than knowing whether we play (the World Cup) in the summer or in the winter."

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has hinted that the 2022 World Cup might be played during the European winter because of the unbearable hear in Qatar in June-July.

Qatar has been criticised for migrants' working conditions in the country and allegations of workers' death on construction sites.

Wenger happy but says too early to talk of title

0 commentaires

An opening goal from Jack Wilshire in Arsenal's 4-1 Premier League win over Norwich City on Saturday was described by manager Arsene Wenger as one of the best he had seen in his 17 years at the north London club.

Wilshere volleyed home in the 18th minute after exchanging four quick passes with Olivier Giroud. Mesut Ozil scored twice and Aaron Ramsey grabbed his ninth of the season to help Arsenal to a two-point lead at the top of the table.

"All the four goals were great but the first was exceptional," Wenger told a post-match news conference. "It was one of the best in my time here for sure."

Wenger said Arsenal, who have not won the league since 2004, were better placed than they had been in any October of recent years. But he stressed the jury was still out on whether they had the resources to take this season's title.

"We have a good attitude and good solidarity level. We have real quality that is clear," he said. "But how far will we go? How consistent will we be? We will have to see.

"We come out of a long period where at this point in October most of the time in recent years...we were already behind. At the moment we are in a better position."

Arsenal, unbeaten since an opening day home defeat by Aston Villa, had made hard work of the first hour on Saturday, failing to carve out any clear cut opportunities after Wilshere's opener. It was not until the game began to break up in the second half that they began to look like scoring again.

After a period of Norwich pressure early in the second half they broke forward on 58 minutes, Ozil heading home Giroud's pinpoint cross.

Jonathan Howson drove past goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny from the edge of the box to get Norwich back in the game with 20 minutes to go before Ramsey slalomed past three defenders in the box, dummying to shoot twice, before driving home.

Ozil tapped in a well-worked fourth with two minutes to go.

"Norwich are a good side," said Wenger. "We had a difficult period between 30 and 60 minutes when we struggled to keep our game going. But I am very happy with the performance."

He added that Matthieu Flamini, who came off with concussion midway through the first half, was doubtful for Tuesday's Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund in London.

Eto'o, Mourinho at centre of controversy as Chelsea win

0 commentaires

Coach Jose Mourinho was ordered from the dugout and striker Samuel Eto'o was involved in a highly debatable equaliser as Chelsea beat Cardiff City 4-1 to move up to second in the Premier League on Saturday.

Mourinho, no stranger to disputes, was sent to the stands 20 minutes from time for protesting to referee Anthony Taylor after becoming increasingly frustrated at what he perceived to be Cardiff's time-wasting tactics.

The Portuguese, though, was not at the heart of the main controversy in the match.

That surrounded Chelsea's first goal, scored after 33 minutes by Eden Hazard after Eto'o had nipped in to steal the ball from Cardiff keeper David Marshall as he was bouncing it.

The visiting players protested but the goal stood and promoted City, who had taken an early lead through Jordan Mutch, were sunk by three second-half strikes.

"At the time I did not see it but I have been in to see the referee," Cardiff manager Malky Mackay told reporters. "Our goalkeeper bounced the ball, he saw the player standing there.

"The referee is saying he heard from his linesman that he dropped the ball. He said if the goalkeeper bounces the ball it is a foul on him.

"It's a huge mistake, a horrendous error. The officials have got it wrong between them and it has cost us. We went in 1-1 at halftime instead of being 1-0 up."

Former referee George Courtney, now an assessor, told the BBC: "It seems to me the goalkeeper is still in possession of the ball while he's bouncing it, according to the law, so he should not be challenged.

"If an identical incident happened tomorrow I would disallow it and award an indirect free kick. But of course do bear in mind the laws of the game are open to interpretation."

Doubles for Ibrahimovic and Cavani as PSG hammer Bastia

0 commentaires

Paris St Germain's Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani each scored twice in a 4-0 win over Bastia as their reshuffled side opened up a three-point lead at the top of Ligue 1 on Saturday.

Ibrahimovic netted an early double before being replaced at halftime by Cavani who scored a superb goal just past the hour and notched a late penalty to round off a fine PSG performance.

The French champions now have 24 points from 10 games ahead of second-placed Monaco who visit Sochaux on Sunday (1200 GMT).

PSG warmed up for their third Champions League Group C game at Anderlecht on Wednesday with Ezequiel Lavezzi and Cavani on the bench and fullbacks Gregory van der Wiel and Maxwell rested.

Coach Laurent Blanc also had to make do without holding midfielders Marco Verratti and Thiago Motta with both suspended.

Sweden international Ibrahimovic, however, made sure PSG did not have to sweat over the result against mid-table Bastia.

He opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a clever back heel from Lucas's cross and doubled the tally three minutes later with a header.

That put the home side in control of the game and substitute Cavani put the result beyond doubt with a sublime goal.

Starting from the edge of the area, PSG's Uruguay striker danced through the Bastia defence, dribbled past keeper Mickael Landreau and netted with a low angled shot in the 62nd.

One minute from time, Cavani got his sixth Ligue 1 goal of the season from the spot after Landreau brought down Lucas Digne in the area to move ahead of Ibrahimovic who has netted five.

Cagliari celebrate victory on return to home town

0 commentaires

Radja Nainggolan (L) of Cagliari in action against Pablo Barrientos (R) of Catania Cagliari's Mauricio Pinilla charged into the stands to celebrate with the fans at the Sant'Elia stadium after tucking home the winner in their 2-1 victory over Catania in Serie A on Saturday.

He was not only sharing the joy of a second league win of the season but welcoming them home after 18 months away.

The Sardinian side had not played at their home ground since a row with the local authorities over safety concerns forced them out in April last year.

The long-winded stadium saga saw them banned from playing at the ill-fated Is Arenas while the club's president Massimo Cellino was arrested for false representation.

However, a ruling on Friday from the Serie A authorities gave the club permission to host games in their home city at least until the end of the season.

Saturday's victory was particularly special for Pinilla, who was on the scoresheet the last time Cagliari played at the Sant'Elia, a 2-0 success against Atalanta.

"This win is for the fans. They welcomed me here with open arms," said Pinilla, who was booked for his wild celebrations among the 4,800 fans packed into the north end of the stadium due to a restricted capacity.

He had raced behind the goal and, taking advantage of the fact there was no barrier separating the hardcore "ultras" and the pitch, shoved past stewards to be mobbed by supporters.

"When you score a goal you don't think about the booking, you only want to celebrate in front of the fans," he said.

The supporters were hit hard by the affair, having to travel to Trieste, a city about 1,000 km from the Sardinian capital near the Slovenian border, if they wanted to see a home game.

Now Cagliari are back in the ground they have called home since 1970, at least for the time being, it is hoped the fans can finally concentrate on the football.

"Our season begins now at the Sant'Elia," manager Diego Lopez had said on Friday. "I don't care that we're only playing in front of 5,000 people. I'd have played there behind closed doors rather than carry on playing away every week."

Barca held at Osasuna, miss out on record

FC Barcelona's Neymar (up) jumps over Osasuna's goalkeeper Andres Fernandez Barcelona dropped their first points of the season when they were held to a 0-0 draw at Osasuna on Saturday and missed the chance to equal the best ever La Liga start.

Lionel Messi, who had not played since the end of last month due to a thigh strain, came off the bench for the final 25 minutes but not even the World Player of the Year could breach the home defence in Pamplona.

Barca and Atletico Madrid won their opening eight games and the latter can open a two-point lead at the top and equal Real Madrid's record of nine wins from nine matches from the 1968-69 season with a win at Espanyol later on Saturday (2000 GMT).

Barcelona, who play at AC Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday and host Real in the 'Clasico' next Saturday, have 25 points, with Atletico second on 24.

Real are two points further back in third after their 2-0 win at home to Malaga in the earlier kickoff with second-half goals from Angel Di Maria and a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty.

Super Salzburg set record with 31-match unbeaten run

0 commentaires

Salzburg set a record for the longest unbeaten run in the Austrian Bundesliga on Saturday when the runaway leaders thrashed second from bottom Wacker Innsbruck 6-0 to make it 31 games without defeat.

Last year's runners-up have not been beaten since Nov. 24 when they lost 3-1 to Ried.

Salzburg have now overhauled the previous record set by Rapid Vienna in 1987. The Bundesliga was launched in its current form in 1974.

Saturday's result was never in doubt after Brazilian Alan gave the home team an eighth-minute lead and the visitors had goalkeeper Szabolcs Safar sent off seven minutes later for denying a clear scoring opportunity.

Alan added another in the 24th minute, his 10th goal of the season, and Stefan Ilsanker and Sadio Mane made it 4-0 before halftime.

Dusan Svento and Jonathan Soriano, with his 12th goal of the season, completed the rout in the second half.

Salzburg have dominated Austrian football since they were taken over by the Red Bull energy drink manufacturers in 2005, winning the Bundesliga four times since then.

They have never qualified for the Champions League and angry fans founded a breakaway club, Austria Salzburg playing in their original violet and white, in protest at some of the changes introduced since the takeover.

Saturday's win left them eight points clear at the top with 28 points from 12 games.

Second-placed SV Groedig won 4-0 at bottom club Admira Wacker.

Admira, who have had eight points deducted for breaching licensing regulations, had two players sent off - Wilfried Domoraud in the first half and Andreas Leitner in the second.

Champions Austria Vienna drew 1-1 at Ried, leaving them fifth with 16 points.

Changed Rooney should not be judged on past, says Hodgson

0 commentaires

England striker Wayne Rooney has the potential to be one of the standout players of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and should not be judged on his past disciplinary problems, said manager Roy Hodgson.

The Manchester United forward has been in terrific form for his country, scoring in their last two World Cup qualifiers to take his tally to seven goals in his six games in the campaign as England finished top of their group.

However, the 27-year-old's performances at past major tournaments for England have been less than stellar.

Rooney, who played in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, has yet to find the net at the finals and has a less than perfect overall disciplinary record in internationals, having twice been sent off.

"If the question is, do I believe Wayne Rooney has got the ability and can be a star at the World Cup playing for England playing like he is at the moment?, I would say: 'Yes of course I believe it, of course I think he can do it'," said Hodgson at a media briefing this week.

"You can't keep judging people on the past and errors they've made in the past. If there's been temperament errors, he's been lambasted for them and paid the penalty for them but you can't keep on dragging that up," added the 66-year-old.

Rooney was infamously sent off against Portugal in the quarter-finals of the 2006 World Cup after stamping on Ricardo Carvalho and pushing his then-United team mate Cristiano Ronaldo.

England lost the match 3-1 on penalties to go out of the competition.

SARCASTIC COMMENT

Four years later in South Africa, Rooney drew criticism after sarcastically commenting to television cameras "nice to see your home fans booing you" as he walked off the pitch at the end of a lacklustre 0-0 draw with Algeria in a group game.

He later apologised for the incident.

Rooney was also shown a straight red card in a Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro for petulantly kicking out at Miodrag Dzudovic and missed the first two matches of the tournament.

Hodgson intimated he wanted to let bygones be bygones as far as Rooney was concerned and cited the forward as being a shining example to the younger squad members.

"If we look over the last 10 games we've played in these qualifying tournaments ... his discipline has been fantastic," the manager said.

"His discipline around the place, his influence and his example to the other players, I can only judge like that. I'm not really prepared to concern myself with 'well in this tournament this, or in that qualifier that'.

"I'm only prepared to judge Wayne on how he's been with me since I've known him and he's been very, very good both as a player and in terms of his discipline so why should I doubt him?".

After a sometimes less than convincing World Cup qualifying campaign, England ended with a flourish with dominant performances against Montenegro and Poland to finish unbeaten.

Rooney was prominent in both matches and while Hodgson has played down England's chances of winning the trophy he is content with the way his team played.

"I would like to think the footballing public have been satisfied with us so far and have even got a certain degree of excitement with the players we've got coming through now and the way we're trying to play," he said.

"This could be an interesting tournament."
